OUR RESIDENT SOMMELIER
Lucinda Smith, Events & Operations
Lucinda Smith currently holds the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) and Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS) titles from the Society of Wine Educators as well as the Advanced Certification with Merit and the Intermediate Certification with Distinction from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. She is also a certificate holder from the Sommelier Society of Washington, D.C. She has completed the Australian Sommelier Immersion Program (SIP) through Wine Australia and has been a participant in both Oregon Pinot Camp and Road Trip Washington, immersion programs on Oregon and Washington State wines, respectively, hosted for the trade. She also holds a certificate for completing the Introductory Course of the Court of Master Sommeliers. In January 2012, she successfully passed the Center for Wine Origins Wine Location Specialist (WLS) Certificate Program, which is focused on the regions of Champagne and Porto. In July of 2013, Lucinda obtained the Advanced Ambassador Level III from the Academy of Wines of Portugal and in December of 2013, she obtained the California Wine Appellation Specialist (CWAS) Certificate through the San Francisco Wine School.
Lucinda has been a member of the Guild of Sommeliers and the Society of Wine Educators and was a judge for several years for the Virginia Governor’s Cup Competition in prior years. Currently, she is a judge for the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition and for the Loudoun Wine Awards. At the request of Doug Fabbioli, owner and winemaker at Fabbioli Cellars, she initiated and ran for four years the LoCo Tasting Group which is for winemakers of Loudoun County and their staff as well as marketers of Loudoun County wines. Lucinda was also a founding member of the Piedmont Epicurean Arts Center in Loudoun County.
Currently, Lucinda consults for the hospitality industry integrating technology needs (Point of Sale, gift card programs, loyalty programs, reservation systems, etc) and training on service standards as well as represents several Virginia wineries in selling their wines to both restaurant and retail licensees.
Previously, she worked as a Fine Wine Sales Consultant at Washburn Wine Company out of Baltimore which specializes in Belgian beers & artisanal spirits. Prior to this, she owned The Vineyard Table, a fine wine shop located in Herndon, Virginia, and owned and managed The Wine Seller, a wine retailer also located in Herndon, Virginia for a decade combined. Rounding out her wine experience includes the role of Fine Wine Sales Consultant for Roanoke Valley Wine Company for three years representing some of the best wine portfolios available to U.S. consumers (Eric Solomon European Selections, Louis Dressner Selections, Epic Wines, Negociants USA and several top notch Oregon Pinot Noir producers) and she was the Sommelier at Tuscarora Mill in Leesburg – completing her experience of working all of the angles of the wine trade – retail, wholesale and restaurant.
A self-confessed, lifelong “restaurant rat”, Lucinda has worked in several Washington, D.C., area restaurants including Off the Record at the Hay-Adams Hotel and Sequoia Restaurant both in Washington, D.C.; Santa Fe East, 219 Restaurant and Elysium at The Morrison House all in Alexandria; Bistro Bistro and Capital City Brewing Company in Arlington and The Tower Club, a members only club, in McLean, Virginia to name a few. She most recently worked in the restaurant industry as Maître d’ at The Ashby Inn & Restaurant in Paris, Virginia for three years until 2014. In her free time, she lends her services to A Thyme and a Place Food Consultants of Delray whose clients include many on Capitol Hill and in Old Town Alexandria.
